Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide: Symptoms of a Culture of Death

Only Canadian Parliament can resolve these issues of life and death.  As a matter of fact, in May 2010, the Members of Parliament again said “no” to a bill (C-384) which would have legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Would you like medical students - those who will soon be you doctors - to learn not only how to heal, but how to kill? Would you like to wonder one day, as you enter the hospital: “Will they treat me or kill me?”

Aid to West Africa

(Excerpt from message by Archbishop Miller, CSB)

 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

         

          In February, Pope Benedict XVI called on the international community to come to the aid of West Africa Sahel region, noting its extreme poverty and worsening conditions.

 

          Since then, the area has continued to experience a food crisis brought about by low rainfall and drought.  The area is on the brink of a humanitarian crisis that will leave about 15 million people at risk of not having enough food.

 

          It is crucial that we, whom the Lord has blessed with such abundance, respond to the dire needs of our brothers and sisters.  On Jul 22 (this Sunday), a special second collection in the Archdiocese will be taken for the needs of the Sahel region.

         

          The funds raised will help support large-scale food distribution projects organized by Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger and Caritas Burkina Faso.

 

          Please use the special collection envelopes that you will find in your pews, or donate online at www.devp.org/donate.

 

Parish Picnic  will be held on Aug 6 (BC Day) at Centennial Beach, Boundary Bay.  Bus service will be provided at $10 for adult and $8 for children under 12 years old.  Please register and purchase bus ticket at the Info Counter ASAP.

 

2nd Live-in Retreat    The Canadian Martyrs Prayer Community is holding a 2nd live-in retreat this summer, this time for high school students from 13 - 17 years old at Camp Capilano, North Vancouver from Aug 3-5, 2012. The theme is "Kairos - the Lord's Time" cost is $50 per person, which includes lodging & meals.  Please call Orlando at 604-805-5042.

*         Known as “Simon the Zealot” interpreted as one zealous for God or belonging to a Jewish sect that openly resisted the Roman hold of the Jews in Palestine.

*         Placed eleventh in the list of Apostles according to Matthew and Mark.

*         Brother “i.e. relative” of our Lord. (Mt 13:55, Mk 6:3)

*         Believed that he went to Palestine, Egypt, North Africa, Britain and Iran for evangelization.

*         Died around A.D. 79, about 70.

*         Suffered martyrdom by being saw into two.

*         In art, he is depicted with a saw, the instrument of his death, or a book, symbolic of his zeal for the law.

*         Feast day: Oct 28.

 

Live-in Retreat    The Canadian Martyrs Prayer Community is holding a live-in retreat for college students and young professionals from 18 - 28 years old at Camp Capilano, North Vancouver from July 13-15, 2012. The retreat master is Rev. Fr. Louie Jimenez from Kelowna. Cost per person is $50. Our youth members will be at the foyer after the mass to answer any questions and to distribute the forms.
